Don't forget the Bindery

Trimming - Don't forget to give the bindery bleed. Bleed refers to any printed matter that should extend to the very edge of the printed piece. This printing must extend past the desired final trim. The machinery that will cut, bind or fold your final product cannot make that trim so perfect as to hit right on the edge of the exact final trim everytime. Because of this we require bleed. The preferred amount is 1/8", but 1/16th of an inch will often work. Check with your printer first.

Folding - These are tips on how to set up files for different types of folds.

1. Roll fold brochures - The first two panels should be the same as the final size of the folded piece. Every panel after that should be reduced by 1/32 of an inch.

2. Double parallel fold- Make all the panels the same width which will be the size of the finished folded piece.

3. Gate fold - The center panels should be should be the same as the final size of the folded piece. The panels that fold in should be 3/32" to 1/8" shorter.

4. Accordian fold - An accordian fold brochure has all the panels the exact same size. This is easy to setup on the computer, but difficult to fold perfect because of the inherent nature of paper.

We have put together some for pocketfolders & common types of folded brochures with the panel sizes already configured. Take a look and use what you need. Please note that we have done them both in Quark & Indesign.
